Vladimir Rashet

Rashet, Vladimir Karlovich

Born 1813; died Sept. 25 (Oct. 7), 1880, in Besançon, France. Russian metallurgist and inventor in the field of blast-furnace engineering.

After graduating from the Cadet School of Mining in St. Petersburg in 1833, Rashet studied mining for two years in Sweden. He later worked at factories in the Urals and St. Petersburg. In the late 1850’s he was appointed director of the Nizhnii Tagil Mining District. From 1861 to 1876 he was director of the Mining Department.

Rashet invented a new system for the multituyere blast furnace and a shaft furnace for the smelting of copper, lead, and silver. Blast furnaces designed by Rashet were constructed in Russia in the 1870’s.
