Thomas Edward LawrenceLawrence, Thomas EdwardBorn Aug. 15, 1888, in Tremadoc, Caernarvonshire; died May 19, 1935, near Claude’s Hill, Dorsetshire. British spy. By training an archaeologist, Lawrence served in the British Army from 1914 to 1919 and from 1922 to 1935. While attached to the British Arab Bureau in Cairo between 1916 and 1919, he did intelligence work in Syria, Palestine, Arabia, and Egypt. In 1921-22 he was an adviser on Arab affairs in the Colonial Office. In 1925-29 he was in Karachi and in Peshawar on the border of Afghanistan, where he was engaged in subversive activity against Afghanistan and the USSR. He hatched a plan to seize the Near East and create on Arab territory “the first colored dominion” in the British empire. In his last years he was close to the British fascists.
