Szinyei Merse Pál
Born July 4, 1845, in the village of Szinyeújfalu; died Feb. 2, 1920, in Jernye. Hungarian realist painter.
Szinyei Merse studied at the Munich Academy of Arts from 1864 to 1870. One of Hungary’s first plein-air painters, he executed landscapes, genre pictures, and still lifes. Examples of his work in the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest include The Lovers (1870), A Stroll in May (1873), and Melting Snow (1895). In these and other works, Szinyei Merse used various color effects with a light, bright palette.
