Treblinka

two fascist death camps in Poland, which was occupied by Hitlerite Germany from 1939 to 1944. The camps were located near Treblinka Station in Warszawa Województwo. Treblinka I, a so-called labor camp, was set up in the summer of 1941; Treblinka II, an extermination camp, was established in the spring of 1942. More than 800,000 prisoners were exterminated in the camps, including citizens of Poland, the USSR, Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, France, and Yugoslavia.

In August 1943 an uprising prepared by an organization of the resistance broke out in Treblinka II; the camp was dismantled after the uprising had been suppressed. Treblinka I was dismantled in July 1944 as Soviet troops were approaching. On the site of Treblinka now stand a symbolic cemetery and a mausoleum to commemorate the dead; these monuments were built between 1959 and 1964 by the sculptors F. Duszenko, A. Haupt, and F. Strynkiewicz.
