Ten Days on the Island

Ten Days on the Island

Late March-early April, bienniallyEvery two years, arts enthusiasts travel to Tasmania, an island off the southern coast of Australia, for Ten Days on the Island. First launched in 2001, this biennial festival celebrates island culture and showcases local and international art in all major forms: dance, theatre, music, opera, film, and literature. The festival's organizer, Tasmania's Department of Tourism, Arts and the Environment, markets the festival with the double aim of drawing tourists and boosting employment for local artists and arts practitioners.
There are on average 200 ticketed and free performances and exhibitions, held at roughly 40 locations in the island's capital, Hobart, and throughout the state of Tasmania. Estimates of past events have counted 160,000 attendants. The festival has drawn more international artists over the years, and in 2007, it began offering regional tours of theater productions.
