Ussuriisk

 

(until 1935, Nikol’sk-Ussuriiskii; from 1935 to 1957, Voroshilov), a city under krai jurisdiction and the administrative center of Ussuriisk Raion, Primor’e Krai, RSFSR. Situated on the Razdol’naia River, 112 km north of Vladivostok. Railroad station on the Khabarovsk-Vladivostok line. Population, 145,000 (1976). Ussuriisk was founded in 1898 by the merging of the village of Nikol’skii with the settlement of Ketritsevo. Industrial enterprises in the city include a butter and fat-processing combine, a sugar refinery, a milling combine, a meat-packing plant, a machine-building plant, a locomotive repair plant, a leather and footwear association, and the Rabotnitsa Garment Factory. Ussuriisk has agricultural and pedagogical institutes, a technicum for training in railroad transportation, a sovkhoz technicum, a medical school, and a school of cultural education. Two drama theaters and the Iunost’ People’s Amateur Theater are located in the city.
