Ust-Kamenogorsk Hydroelectric Power Plant

Ust’-Kamenogorsk Hydroelectric Power Plant

a power plant on the upper course of the Irtysh River, near the city of Ust’-Kamenogorsk, Kazakh SSR. The installed capacity is 332 megawatts (four units of 83 megawatts each), and the average annual electric power production totals 1,520 million kilowatt-hours. The maximum head is 41.8 m.

The hydroengineering system includes a spillway dam 92 m. long at the crest, with four spillway openings designed for a water flow of 3,400 cu m per sec; the system also includes concrete nonoverflow dams 300 m long, a single-chamber lock, and a hydroelectric power plant building 129 m long. The hydroengineering system creates the Ust’-Kamenogorsk Reservoir. Construction of the power plant was begun in 1939 and completed in 1954. Electricity generated by the power plant is transmitted to Altaienergo in eastern Kazakhstan.
