Vladimir Struminskii

Struminskii, Vladimir Vasil’evich

Born Apr. 16 (29), 1914, in Orenburg. Soviet scientist; specialist in aerodynamics, aircraft, and the theory of airplane design. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966; corresponding member, 1958).

Struminskii graduated from Moscow State University in 1938 and worked at the N. E. Zhukovskii Central Aerodynamic and Hydrodynamic Institute from 1941 to 1966. He served as director of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1966 to 1971. In 1971, Struminskii became director of the department of physical aeromechanics in the Institute of Problems of Mechanics under the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Struminskii developed the theory of the three-dimensional boundary layer and the vortex wing theory used in identifying the major features of the airflow around swept and delta wings. These and other investigations by him played a significant role in the achievement of supersonic flight speeds. Struminskii has also conducted research in nonlinear stability theory, dynamic turbulence theory, the kinetic theory of gases, and the improvement of aircraft performance by laminarization of the boundary layer.

Struminskii has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR twice (1947, 1948), the N. E. Zhukovskii First Prize and Gold Medal (1947), and the Lenin Prize (1961). He has also been awarded the Order of Lenin and two other orders.
