Szubrawcy

(the Rogues), the humorous self-appellation of a literary and social circle of the Polish intelligentsia in Vilnius from 1816 to 1822.

The Szubrawcy published the satirical weekly Wiadomości Brukowe (Street News), in which, in the spirit of liberal enlightenment, they criticized obscurantism, the arrogance of the Polish gentry, and the blind imitation of foreign fashion. The circle adopted a ritual that parodied the rites of the Masons. The Szubrawcy maintained ties with the Philarets and Philomats, which were patriotic youth groups. The Szubrawcy disbanded after the authorities closed down their journal and as a result of persecution by the Masons and other organizations.
