Ritchie, William A. (Augustus)

(1903– ) archaeologist; born in Rochester, N.Y. He was on the staff of the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences (1924–49), served as New York state archaeologist (1950–71), and joined the Carnegie Museum (1973). Among his important works on northeast American prehistoric archaeology is The Archaeology of New York State (1965, revised several times).
