Strunnikov, Vladimir Aleksandrovich

Born July 2 (15), 1914, in Tambov. Soviet geneticist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976).

Strunnikov graduated from Tashkent Agricultural Institute in 1936. He worked at the Central Asian Scientific Research Institute of Sericulture from 1936 to 1939 and from 1945 to 1963; he became head of the breeding and genetics section in 1938. Strunnikov was a professor at the University of Tashkent from 1963 to 1968. Since 1968, he has been head of the laboratory of reproduction and sex regulation at the N. K. Kol’tsov Institute of Developmental Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Strunnikov’s main works have dealt with the genetics and selection of the silkworm. He proposed economically feasible methods of obtaining individual silkworms of the desired sex. He also devised a method of artificial meiotic parthenogenesis that produces only males homozygous for all genes.

Strunnikov has been awarded three orders and several medals.
