Thomas Livingstone Mitchell

Mitchell, Thomas Livingstone

 

Born June 15, 1792, in Scotland; died Oct. 5, 1855, in Sydney. Scottish explorer in Australia.

Having arrived in Sydney in 1827, Mitchell was soon appointed the surveyor general of New South Wales. Between 1831 and 1847 he made four expeditions into the interior regions of eastern and central Australia. He explored the Murray-Darling river system and the Australian Alps and proved that the Darling River flows into the Murray River. A river in northeastern Australia has been named after Mitchell.
