Thomas’s test

Thomas’s test

A clinical test used to identify rectus femoris or iliopsoas tightness.
Technique
The patient begins lying supine with his or her knees bent at the end of the examination table. The examiner places one hand between the lumbar lordotic curve and the tabletop, passively flexes one of the patient's legs to his or her chest, allowing the knee to flex during the movement, and observes the involved leg.
Positive test
Knee extension as the examiner flexes the hip implies rectus femoris tightness; if the leg on the table rises, it implies iliopsoas tightness.
