Vladimir Tikhomirov

Tikhomirov, Vladimir Vladimirovich

Born Oct. 12 (25), 1915, in Petrograd. Soviet geologist. Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1949); professor (1955). Member of the CPSU from 1940.

Tikhomirov graduated from the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute in 1938. In 1949 he became a research worker at the geological history laboratory of the Geological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; in 1956 he was made head of the laboratory. Since 1955 he has been chairman of the Committee on the Geological Study of the USSR.

Tikhomirov’s principal works deal with the history and methodology of geology, with regional geology, and with geotectonics. In 1958 he proposed a hypothesis concerning the metasomatic alteration of the material constituting the earth’s crust.

Since 1966, Tikhomirov has been a member of the International Academy of the History of Science. He was the initiator of the International Committee on the History of the Geological Sciences and became its first president in 1968. Tikhomirov has been awarded the Order of the October Revolution, three other orders, and various medals.
