From the end of the Villanovan culture Veii was an important center in central Italy. Beginning with the fifth century B.C. the Romans waged systematic wars against Veii, which ended with the destruction of the city in 396 B.C.; Veii was later restored by Emperor Augustus. Excavations begun in the 19th century discovered an acropolis with remnants of fortress walls and houses, a temple from the sixth century B.C., a large pool, marvelous Etruscan sculptures of Apollo and Hermes, many tombs (the most interesting of which, Tomba Campana, has ancient Etruscan frescoes), and many other objects.
