Södra Kvarken

a strait between the Åland Islands and the Scandinavian Peninsula, joining the Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic Sea. Width, approximately 40 km; maximum depth, 244 m. The current is usually southern. The strait is frozen in severe winters; in milder, less cold winters it is covered with ice floes.
