Vanino

 

an urban-type settlement in Sovetskaia Gavan’ Raion, Khabarovsk Krai, RSFSR. The settlement has a port in Vanino Bay of the Tatar Strait and a railroad station on the Komsomol’sk-na-Amure-Sovetskaia Gavan’ line. Population, 16,000 (1968). Vanino has a lumber industrial combine, and a ferry crossing between it and Sakhalin Island.

The Vanino commercial seaport was established in 1944, and it operates all year round thanks to the icebreakers that take the freighters through. Vanino is an important point for shipping cargo and passengers to Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and the coastal regions of the Sea of Okhotsk.
