Struve, Liudvig Ottovich

 

(also Ludwig von Struve). Born Oct. 20 (Nov. 1), 1858, in Pulkovo; died Nov. 4, 1920, in Simferopol’. Russian astronomer.

The son of O. V. Struve, L. O. Struve graduated from the University of Dorpat (Tartu) in 1880. Between 1886 and 1894 he was an astronomer at the Dorpat Observatory. He became a professor at the University of Kharkov in 1897 and director of the university’s observatory in 1898.

Struve did research on binary stars. He made use of the occultation of stars by the moon to determine the moon’s radius.
