St. Theodore Stratilates on the Brook, Church of
an important Russian architectural monument in Novgorod, built in 1360–61. The Church of St. Theodore Stratilates, a cubic structure with a cruciform plan, has four piers and a single dome. It is notable for the fine proportions of its external walls, which rise to form trefoil-like gables, and for its richly ornamented interior, especially the arches, niches, and crosses in relief. The interior has spacious choirs with chapels and sacristies. The expressive monochrome frescoes, executed in the second half of the 14th century, depict figures of remarkable dramatic pathos and create the effect of swift, rhythmic movement. The refectory and bell tower were added to the church in 1697–98.
