Pome an enclosed, fleshy, usually many-seeded fruit. At maturation, the tissue of the pericarp is differentiated into an external succulent part and an internal cartilaginous or leathery part. Examples of the latter are pomes of the apple, pear, and mountain ash. Sometimes the inner section becomes completely ligneous, as in the cotoneaster. Many pomes are edible. pomeenUK
