Skarainis, Oleg

Born Aug. 5, 1923, in the village of Fin’-kovo, Kalinin Oblast. Soviet sculptor.

From 1952 to 1958, Skarainis studied under T. Zaļkalns at the Academy of Arts of the Latvian SSR in Riga. His works include the patinated plaster casts Portrait of an Athlete (1956, collection of the artist, Riga) and Glory to the Sun! (1958, collection of the artist, Riga). From 1961 to 1967, Skarainis worked on the concrete memorial ensemble to the victims of fascist terror in Salaspils, on which he collaborated with the sculptors L. Bukovskii and I. Zarinš, the architect G. Asaris, and others. Skarainis was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1970.
