Vladimir Vasilevich Golubev

Born Nov. 21 (Dec. 3), 1884, in the city of Sergiev, now Zagorsk, Moscow Oblast; died Dec. 4, 1954, in Moscow. Soviet mathematician and specialist in mechanics. Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1934) and Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1943). Major general in the technical service.

Golubev graduated from Moscow University in 1908. From 1917 he was a professor at the University of Saratov and from 1930, senior engineer of the Central Aerohy-drodynamics Institute and a professor at Moscow University. He was head of the subdepartment of higher mathematics at the N. E. Zhukovskii Air Force Academy (from 1932). His principal scientific works were in aeromechanics and the theory of functions of a complex variable. He continued and developed the work of S. A. Chaplygin in aeromechanics. Golubev is responsible for a method of calculating wing of finite span, a theory of wing of small extension, and the development of the theory of a laminar boundary layer. He achieved important results in high-lift wing theory and formulated the flapping-wing theory. His primary mathematical works were devoted to the theory of analytic functions and the analytic theory of differential equations. Golubev’s works on the history of Russian science are well known. He was awarded four orders and various medals.
