video evidence

video evidence

evidence displayed on a television screen or monitor having been gathered by a camera. In general such evidence is now widely used but much depends on its nature and purpose. Evidence maybe used by the prosecution in criminal cases of the commission of an offence caught on a security video. In civil damages cases the defendant's insurers may adduce film of an allegedly malingering claimant. Live, as opposed to recorded, images maybe used where the witness is distant and cross-examination is needed. Special rules exist in many jurisdictions to allow children or other vulnerable witnesses to testify by video link to avoid the perceived trauma of appearance in court.
