Tenishev, Viacheslav Nikolaevich

 

Born 1843 in Warsaw; died Apr. 25 (May 8), 1903, in Paris. Russian ethnographer and sociologist. Prince Tenishev received a technical education and was a major entrepreneur until 1895. He founded the Ethnographic Bureau in 1898 and developed the Ethnographic Information Programs to research the activities and behavior of peasants and the urban educated for the administration. The first program turned up much valuable information, which is in the archives of the State Ethnological Museum of the ’Peoples of the USSR in Leningrad; the second program was not completed. As a scholar-Tenishev was an adherent of bourgeois positivism. He founded the Tenishev Realschule in St. Petersburg in 1896.
