Untrained in archaeology, geology, or fieldwork, he managed to get himself sent as U.S. consul to Mexico (1885), expressly to investigate Maya sites, and for 40 years he sent back a stream of valuable artifacts and information, particularly from Chichén Itzá. His popular books stimulated public interest in Maya culture. |
