In northwest-central MT, northwest of Great Falls; organized Feb 17, 1919 from Chouteau and Teton counties. Name Origin: From French pend d'oreille 'hanging ear,' first applied to a lake in ID, thought to resemble an earlobe. To avoid confusion with the lake and town, name was changed to Pondera.
