a river on the Kola Peninsula. It is 426 km long and drains an area of 15,500 sq km. Originating in the western part of the Keivy ridge, the Ponoi empties into the White Sea. The banks of the upper and middle courses are low-lying. The lower course flows across the spurs of the Keivy ridge, through a canyon-like valley. Here the channel has many rapids, of which the best known are the Kolmatskii rapids. The river is fed mainly by snow. There is high water in May and June and low water in summer and fall. The mean flow rate is 175 cu m per sec, with a maximum rate of 3,500 cu m per sec. The river is frozen from late October or early November until the first half of May. Timber is floated on the Ponoi.
