Walerian Kalinka

(pseudonym, Bronislaw Kamie-niecki). Born in 1826 in Krakow; died Dec. 15, 1886, in L’vov. Polish historian. A leading exponent of the Kraków historical school. Of petty gentry origin.

Kalinka graduated from the University of Kraków. He participated in the Kraków Uprising of 1846, emigrating to France in 1856. In the late 1860’s he joined the monastic order of the Resurrectionists and settled in Galicia. Kalinka’s works, notably The Last Years of the Reign of Stanistaw August (1868) and The Four-Year Sejm (1880–88), are devoted primarily to the period of the partition of Poland, interpreted from a clerical and conservative standpoint.
