Adrian Ludwig Richter

Richter, Adrian Ludwig

Born Sept. 28, 1803, in Dresden; died there June 19, 1884. German painter and graphic artist. Representative of late romanticism.

Richter studied at the Dresden Academy of Art, where he later taught from 1836 to 1877. His early romantic landscapes, for example, Forest Spring Near Ariccia (1831; National Gallery, Berlin), were overburdened with details and painted in a stiff manner. Later works, such as Wedding Procession in the Spring (1847; Dresden Picture Gallery), were painted in a touching but somewhat sentimental style and idealized the patriarchal life of the German provinces and villages. Richter also produced drawings on the life, tales, and songs of the people.
