Established: Authorized on September 28, 1962; established on April 6, 1968.
Location:Southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas. From Corpus Christi, go east through the city on South Padre Island Dr. (Highway 358), past the JFK Causeway and the bridge onto Padre Island, and continue 10 miles south on Park Road 22.
Facilities:Campgrounds (é), rest rooms (é), picnic areas, observation decks, boat ramp, bathhouse, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, auto touring, swimming, boating, fishing, windsurfing, water-skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, bird-watching, educational and interpretive programs.
Special Features:The longest remaining undeveloped barrier island in the world (80.5 miles) is noted for its wide sand beaches, excellent fishing, and abundant bird and marine life. Because of its location on a major migratory route known as the CentralFlyway, approximately 380 species of birds have been documented withinthe National Seashore, representing almost 45% of all bird speciesdocumented in North America.
