Paduan School

a school of painting that developed in Padua and played a significant role in the establishment and development of Renaissance art in northern Italy. The painting of 14th-century Padua is represented by the works of the visiting masters Giotto, Altichiero, and Avanzo and by local followers of Giotto. By the mid-15th century an independent school had formed around the painter F. Squarcione. The masters of this new school—N. Pizzolo, Bono da Ferrara, and Ansuino da Forlì —combined Late Gothic elements with sharp, clear forms and careful study of classical monuments. Andrea Mantegna is the greatest representative of the Paduan School.
