Died 1832. Figure in the American labor movement in the 1820’s.
Skidmore helped found the New York Workingmen’s Party in 1829 and conceived its platform. He advanced a Utopian platform for the peaceful transformation of capitalist society through the equal redistribution of land. He also attacked black slavery and defended equal rights for women. After a split in the Workingmen’s Party, Skidmore headed the Agrarian Workingmen’s Party, which existed until 1831.
