Trembecki, Stanislaw

Born circa 1739 in Jastrzebniki; died Dec. 12, 1812, in Tul’chin, in what is now Vinnitsa Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Polish poet.

Trembecki studied at the Kraków School from 1753 to 1757. His style developed under the influence of classicism and the rococo. Trembecki composed political poems, odes, poetic epistles, descriptive narrative poems, and various panegyrics dedicated to figures of the national enlightenment. Criticizing feudal ethical standards and religious fanaticism, these works reveal elements of Trembecki’s materialist world view.

Trembecki translated Horace, Vergil, Tasso, Racine, Shakespeare, and Voltaire.
