Rabochii i Soldat

Rabochii i Soldat

(Worker and Soldier), a daily Bolshevik newspaper published in Petrograd from July 23 (Aug. 5) through Aug. 10 (23), 1917. It replaced Soldatskaia pravda, which had been suppressed by the bourgeois Provisional Government. Rabochii i soldat was printed in the People and Labor printing shop. A total of 15 issues appeared, with a circulation varying from 50,000 to 70,000 copies; only six copies of no. 16 (August 10) had been printed when the newspaper was closed down.

Until August 4 (17), Rabochii i soldat was the organ of the Military Organization of the Central Committee of the RSDLP(B). After that date, by a decision of the Central Committee of the RSDLP(B), it was published as an organ of the Central Committee and St. Petersburg Committee of the RSDLP(B) and of the Central Committee’s Military Organization. The editorial board of Rabochii i soldat included A. F. Il’in-Zhenevskii, V. I. Nevskii, N. I. Podvoiskii, and B. Z. Shumiatskii; beginning on August 4 it also included V. Volodarskii, V. P. Miliutin, G. Ia. Sokol’nikov, J. V. Stalin, and a representative of the Military Organization, whose name has not been established.

Contributors to Rabochii i soldat included D. Bednyi, B. A. Breslav, A. M. Kollontai, K. A. Mekhonoshin, K. N. Samoilo-va, and E. M. Iaroslavskii. The newspaper printed V. I. Lenin’s articles “An Answer,” “The Beginning of Bonapartism,” and “Constitutional Illusions,” as well as the decisions and materials of the Sixth Congress of the RSDLP(B). The newspaper was suppressed by the bourgeois Provisional Government.
