Among his novels are On Newfound River (1891) and Red Rock (1898); his volumes of stories include In Ole Virginia (1887) and The Burial of the Guns (1894). He studied at Washington College (Lexington, Va.) (1869–72), and the University of Virginia (L.L.B. 1873–74). He practiced law in Richmond, Va. (1874–93), and wrote sentimental southern dialect stories, such as In Ole Virginia; or, Marse Chan and Other Stories (1887). He also wrote novels, essays, biographies, and children's books, all set in the South before and after the Civil War. He served as U.S. ambassador to Italy (1913–19), but spent most of his life in Virginia. |
