Popov, Aleksandr Nikolaevich

Born 1820; died Nov. 16 (28), 1877, in St. Petersburg. Russian historian. Descendant of the Riazan’ dvorianstvo (nobility or gentry).

Popov graduated from Moscow University in 1839. From 1846 he served in the second section of the tsar’s chancellery and was a member of the Editing Commissions in 1859–60. He was the author of a number of works on Russian foreign policy and the Patriotic War of 1812. He published the important works Materials for the History of the Sten’ka Razin Rebellion (1857) and The Case of Novikov and His Followers in the Light of New Documents (Vestnik Evropy, April 1868). Popov’s historical views were close to those of the state school.
