Popov, Lukian Vasil’evich

Born Oct. 8 (20), 1873, in the village of Arkhangel’skoe, in what is now Orenburg Oblast; died May 8 (21), 1914, in Orenburg. Russian painter. Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1912).

Popov studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1896 to 1902 under V. E. Makovskii. He was an adherent of the peredvizhniki (the “wanderers”—a progressive art movement). In his genre paintings, which were exhibited under neutral titles because of censorship, Popov attempted to depict the revolutionary movement in the countryside, led by the workers. He also sought to portray what was typical of the Russian peasants’ spiritual makeup at the beginning of the 20th century and the revolutionary changes in their world view. A representative work is In the Countryside (Arise and Fight!) (1906–07).
