Racine

(rəsēn`), industrial city (1990 pop. 84,298), seat of Racine co., SE Wis., on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Root River; inc. 1848. It is a port of entry, and its manufactures include farm machinery, automobile parts, stitching machines, tools, corrugated containers, waxes and polishes, and electrical equipment. The first permanent settlement was established in 1834. Improvement of the harbor (c.1844) and the coming of the railroad (1855) brought industrial growth. Three buildings in Racine were designed by Frank Lloyd WrightWright, Frank Lloyd,
1867–1959, American architect, b. Richland Center, Wis., as Frank Lincoln Wright; he changed his name to honor his mother's family (the Lloyd Joneses). Wright is widely considered the greatest American architect.

a city in the northern USA, in Wisconsin. Population, 94,000 (1974; 175,000 including suburbs). Racine is a port on the western shore of Lake Michigan. A total of 27,000 people are employed in industry (1973), which includes agricultural machine building, ferrous and nonferrous metal processing, the manufacture of automobile parts and household appliances, food processing, and the production of footwear.
