Upon graduating from the University of Kazan in 1943, Porai-Koshits began working at the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, where he was appointed head of the laboratory of crystal chemistry in 1959. Since 1952 he has also been head of the laboratory of crystal chemistry in the subdepartment of chemistry at Moscow State University. His main works are devoted to the crystal chemistry of coordination compounds, the X-ray examination of the structure of these substances, and X-ray structural analysis. Many regularities in the stereochemistry of transition metals have been established through the research carried out by Porai-Koshits.
