radar altimeter
radar altimeter[′rā‚där al′tim·əd·ər] (navigation) A radio altimeter, useful at altitudes much greater than the 5000-foot (1500-meter) limit of frequency-modulated radio altimeters, in which simple pulse-type radar equipment is used to send a pulse straight down from an aircraft and to measure its total time of travel to the surface and back to the aircraft. Also known as high-altitude radio altimeter; pulse-type altimeter. radar altimeterAn altimeter that uses radar to find the exact height of the aircraft above the surface. There are basically two types of radar altimeters—those employing pulse radar and others that are frequency-modulated continuous wave radar. The time interval between the transmitted and the received signals is measured in terms of feet or meters above the surface.See ALT See RA |
