A deepwater harbor complex was opened in 1985 for the importation of oil and coal, but due to silting the city has become farther from the harbor waters. Pori was chartered in 1564 and was initially dominated by the Hanseatic LeagueHanseatic League, mercantile league of medieval German towns. A railroad junction, Pori is an important timber center of Finland, with sawmills and pulp-and-paper enterprises. It has machine-building, non-ferrous-metallurgy, textile and food-processing industries. It exports lumber products. The outer harbors are Reporsaari and Mä ntyluoto.
