On central eastern border of WA; organized Jan 29, 1864 (prior to statehood) from Stevens County (an earlier Spokane County was merged with Stevens County in 1863). It is the only WA county with township governments in each township. Name Origin: For the Spokane Indians, or for the city or river also named for the tribe. The meaning of the name is uncertain; possibly 'sun people' or 'children of the sun', or the name may be from Chief Illum Spokane, whose village was at the base of what became known as Spokane Falls
