Poronaisk

(called Sikuka until 1946), a city under oblast jurisdiction; administrative center of Poronaisk Raion, Sakhalin Oblast, RSFSR. Port at the mouth of the Poronai River on Terpenie Gulf of the Sea of Okhotsk. Railroad station 288 km north of Iuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Population 24,000 (1974). Poronaisk has paper-and-pulp and fish-processing combines, cement and building-components plants, and a mink-breeding sovkhoz.
