Palekh

an urban-type settlement and administrative center of Palekh Raion, Ivanovo Oblast, RSFSR. Situated on the Ivanovo-Gorky highway, 30 km east of the Shuia railroad station on the Vladimir-Ivanovo line.

Until the October Revolution of 1917, Palekh was a major center for icon painting in the Russian tradition of the 15th to 17th centuries. In 1924 an artel that specialized in painted papier-mâché items was founded there. Palekh has a drawn-thread embroidery workshop, a flax-processing mill, a milk plant, and other enterprises. It also has an art school and a museum of Palekh art.
