Skriabin, Georgii

Born Sept. 4 (17), 1917, in Leningrad. Soviet microbiologist and biochemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1947. Son of K. I. Skriabin.

Skriabin graduated from the Kazan Veterinary Institute in 1942. He served in the Soviet Army from 1943 to 1946. He started working at the Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1949, becoming head of a laboratory in 1960. In 1962, Skriabin became deputy director and in 1967 director of the Institute of the Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the city of Pushchino. From 1967 to 1974 he was director of the Scientific Center of Biological Research of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the city of Pushchino. He became chief scientific secretary of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1971.

Skriabin’s principal works have dealt with general and industrial microbiology and the biochemistry of microorganisms. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1971 for his contributions to the development of the scientific bases for microbio-logically obtaining proteins from petroleum hydrocarbons. Skriabin has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals.
