Road Oiler

a machine used in the construction and repair of automobile roads for the uniform spreading onto road surfaces of viscous organic materials based on asphalt (or on bitumen or tar). The oiler heats the binding material to 150°-180° C and distributes it in a measured amount (0.5–10 liters/m² over a width of 1–7 m).

The main type of oiler is the truck road oiler. Mounted on the truck chassis are a tank with a capacity of up to 7,000 liters for the binder; a heating system, consisting of burners and a fuel tank; and a distributing system, including a pump capable of creating a pressure of up to 0.6 meganewtons/m²(6 kilograms-force/cm²) and a distributing tube with jets of different sizes. The pump is driven by the truck motor (through a power selector) or from a special motor. The road oiler has control and measuring instruments, including a manometer, a binder tank level indicator, and thermometers. In addition to spreading the binder, the truck road oiler collects the bitumen from the place where it is melted and transports it to the spreading site.

Hand road oilers, with tanks holding 200–500 liters, are used to repair coatings. The material is spread using a hand pump that creates a pressure of 0.2–0.3 meganewtons/m²(2–3 kilograms-force/cm²). Trailer bitumen spreaders are transfer and spreading devices that are used with trucks carrying bitumen.
