radiation therapy technologist

 a health care professional who delivers courses of radiation therapy prescribed by a radiation therapist. Duties include positioning and caring for patients; calibration of teletherapy equipment; preparation of brachytherapy equipment and handling of radioactive materials; assisting the radiation physicist in preparation of isodose curves, performance of computer estimations, and preparation of wedge and compensating filters; observing the patient for signs of clinical progress or complications that require consultation with the physician; and observing radiation safety measures. Individuals completing an accredited program and passing the certification examination of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists are designated RT(T)(ARRT), Registered Technologist. A technologist who assists specialists in nuclear medicine in the proper and safe use of radiation for patient diagnosis and treatment. The roles of the radiation therapy technologist include the operation of radiation detection equipment, the administration of radiopharmaceuticals, and the recognition and early treatment of radiation-related emergencies, among others.
