On central western border of WI, southeast of Saint Paul, MN; organized Jan 27, 1854 from Chippewa County. Name Origin: For the town at the foot of a high elevation surrounded by water; French transliteration la montagne qui termpe a l'eau of an Indian word probably meaning 'mountain drenched with water.' The Trempealeau River forms the lower western border of the county.
