Palli Aike
Palli Aike
a cave site of ancient hunters in southeastern Patagonia in South America (Chile), discovered in 1937 by J. Bird.
The lowest of the five cultural layers contained the charred bones of a fossil horse and sloth. It also contained artifacts made of bone, including awls and pressure-flaking tools, and of stone, including end scrapers, chopping tools, disk-shaped grinders, and spearheads worked on both sides and with hafts in the form of fishtails. Burials (cremations) were found deep within the cave. The lowest layer has been dated by the radiocarbon method to 8,639 ± 450 years ago.
