Palmer, R. R. (Robert Roswell)

(1909– ) historian; born in Chicago, Ill. Educated at the University of Chicago and Cornell (Ph.D. 1934), he taught political history at Princeton (1936–63; 1966–69) and Yale (1969). His focus on the French Revolution as the "shaping" event in modern history received recognition with a Bancroft Award (1960) for The Age of the Democratic Revolution: A Political History of Europe and America, 1760–1800 (volume I, 1959; volume II, 1964).
